What Happens During My Free Divorce Consultation?

divorce consultationWhen you are thinking of filing for divorce, it is an incredibly emotionally heavy decision. You probably want to gather as much information as possible before you begin. Part of that process is to schedule a free divorce consultation with an experienced attorney. The Lucé Law Firm has a team of knowledgeable attorneys who can help explain the divorce process from start to finish.

Schedule Your Consultation

The first step you need to take is to come and discuss your case with a divorce attorney. Call our office to schedule your appointment. Please bring any paperwork you have received from the court, any financial documents, premarital agreements, or other documents that you believe would be of importance. If your spouse served you with paperwork, it is important that you act quickly. You will need to respond to the court within the time limit to assert your rights.

Explain Your Case

During the free divorce consultation, you will have about 30 minutes to one hour to talk about your case. Stick to the facts of what is going on. Why do you want to divorce? Do you think it will go amicably? Do you have children? Assets? Debts? These are the things your attorney will need to discuss with you.

Client Agreement

After talking things over with your attorney, you will need to decide if you would like to hire them for your divorce. You can wait to think about it or decide to hire them on the spot. They will present to you a client agreement contract in which they detail their hourly rates, what they will do for you, and what they expect you to do. Read over the agreement carefully, and then keep a copy for your records.
