Avoid Late Night Drives
A majority drunk driving accidents happen between midnight and 3 a.m. and most occur on the weekend. Try to stay off the road during those high-risk times if you can. If you are out late at night, try to find somewhere to spend the night. If you must drive, do so cautiously and be aware of other cars driving negligently.
Be a Responsible Friend
If you are out with a friend who has been drinking, do not let them get into their car intoxicated. Preventing them from getting behind the wheel while impaired can save their life, and the life of someone else.
If you are hit in an accident, it is a good idea to have an emergency kit packed in your car. This includes a basic medical kit, blanket, flares, flashlight, and bottled water. Make sure to always have your phone to be able to call for help if needed. If you are involved in an accident, do your best to get off the road and then make yourself seen. Subsequent accidents are often the cause of fatal injuries.
Even when you have been in an accident and you suspect the driver is drunk, do not start asserting blame. People who are intoxicated may become angered and can lash out easily. Call the police and remain calm until they arrive. After the accident, call your attorney.
